TRAVEL TIPS

Hotels

In Andros, Bimini, and the Berry Islands, accommodations range from luxurious resorts and rental villas to simpler motel-types and bonefishing lodges. You'll find luxury in Bimini at Resorts World (with its new Hilton), and in Andros at the stunning Kamalame Cay private island and Tiamo Resort. For casual luxury in the Berries, seek out the Carriearl Boutique Hotel and rental villas around Great Harbour Cay. Central Andros's Small Hope Bay Lodge is much-loved by families and repeat guests, lured by famous bonefishing and scuba diving. Bimini's historic Big Game Club and the quieter, modern Bimini Sands Resort attract bone- and deep-sea fishermen and divers that come to dive with sharks, dolphins, and on famous wrecks. All large resorts have water sports, splendid beaches, and all but one have freshwater pools. Most smaller fishing lodges are ill-suited to activity-needy families and small children. Although most hotel clubhouses have Internet, TVs, and phones, many rooms don't. Also ask about air-conditioning in summer and credit card acceptability.

Some establishments are by law too small to charge VAT and some, especially in the smaller Out Islands, don't charge gratuities either. The highest rates and busiest times vary with each resort, usually occurring around the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter holidays and from February to June. High season is usually February to April, but these islands can also be busy through June.
